Horse Creek Lake Revitalization

Working with a dedicated group of community members, GWWC and the Upper Guyandotte Watershed Association are leading the revitalization efforts at Horse Creek Lake, a once prime recreation location for local anglers, families, and community organizations.

Horse Creek Lake is a five acre lake located within 47 acres of a Wild Life Management Area near Baileysville, WV.  The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, also a leading partner in the revitalization of Horse Creek Lake, manages the Wild Life Management Area.

The goal of the project is to enhance recreation and education opportunities at the Lake while remediating any environmental hazards that are present.

In 2010, the Upper Guyandotte Watershed Association (UGWA) received a West Virginia Brownfields FOCUS grant to begin revitalization planning. GWWC partnered with UGWA to carry out the initial planning phase, which included a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, Community Visioning Meetings, and the creation of a revitalization plan. WVU Department of Landscape Architecture facilitated the community meetings and created the revitalization plan.

Currently, GWWC, UGWA, the WV DNR, and community members are working together to implement the Horse Creek Lake Revitalization Project.
